Zen Koan – Snakes and Ropes

Young Hindu Walking

A young Hindu man decided to go and visit his uncle, who lived in another village. His uncle’s village was on the other side of the valley, and was known for its abundance of snakes. The young man had not made the trip alone before, and was somewhat nervous about the snakes. He walked all through the day, reaching his uncle’s home just as night was falling. After his uncle greeted him, tired and dusty, the young man was invited to clean himself in the outdoor shower. As our friend leaned back his head into the stream of water, he stepped backwards onto a thick rope lying on the ground.

Yes, that is the whole story. People often look at me expectantly waiting for explanation. I love this little story, because it calls into challenge things we ‘know to be true’. How many times have we been so absolutely sure about something, because we ‘feel it in our bones’? This story illustrates how easily we can be deceived by our senses, and by our physical reactions. Imagine what would happen to your heart rate if you were the young man stepping on the rope? The true meaning of this story is that it is a Zen Koan, which means that there is no meaning. I hope this story stays with you, and that you share it with your friends.

Forgiveness; free yourself

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

This little story may change the way you look at forgiveness and choice.  Every time I tell it, I get choked up. I am glad that my Higher Power is looking for progress not perfection.

Here’s the story:

When the Chinese invaded Tibet many Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns were held captive. These peace-loving contempletive men and women were systematically tortured, abused and murdered. One monk, a prisoner for several years narrowly escaped through the mountains into India.  Soon after he gained freedom, the monk was interviewed  regarding his ordeal. One of the questions asked of him was this: “What was your greatest fear during your captivity?” His response, “I was afraid that I would stop loving my captors”.

Who are you choosing to not forgive today?

Sponsorship. Learn all about it here.

Monday, July 5th, 2010

This little gem comes from Dave P., Ontario.  He suggests we share it will all the sponsors and sponsees out there.

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He descended a bit more and shouted to a man on the ground, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The man on the ground below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 And 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”

“You must be a sponsor,” said the balloonist.

“I am,” replied the man, “how did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is, I believe, technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information and the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve probably delayed my trip.”

The man below responded, “You must be a Sponsee.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect other people to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault!”

Almost 15 months ago, I spent 91 days at A Home Away Treatment Centre.  I am writing this letter in supp0rt of this most astounding centre.  I know that it has saved lives of many including my own.  I am truly grateful to A Home Away for my sobriety, without them I may not have made it this far.  A Home Away has a very high success rate that I am aware of.  I know it was the best place for me to begin my journey into recovery. A Home Away helps addicts that deserve the best and have struggled with a variety of addictions.  A Home Away treats every type of addiction and has the most professional help and loving, supportive, and healthy environment.

Addicts have suffered far too long and A Home Away allows them to relax, rejuvenate, and learn how to live a healthy sober/clean life.  I can only begin to tell you the amount of work that is put into this amazing addiction retreat centre.  I only hope this letter will make you see that its more than just a treatment centre, but truly a place away from home.  Once I finished my 91 day stay, I moved to Kelowna and have since visited this Home because I know I am always welcome for meals and sharing anything that’s going on with me.

Jane and John Derry are a marvelous pair who truly just want to help individuals like myself who may not have a home or have a healthy one to go back to.  I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,

BD, Kelowna

What Are You Thirsty For?

WATER by Robert Fulghum

Water is everywhere & in all living things – we cannot be separated from water.

No water, no life. Period. Water comes in many forms – liquid, vapor, ice, snow, fog, rain, hail.

But no matter the form, it’s still water.

Human beings give this stuff many names in many languages, in all its forms.

It’s crazy to argue over what its true name is. Call it what you will, there is no difference to the water. It is what it is.

Human beings drink water from many containers – cups, glasses, jugs, skins, their own hands, whatever.

To argue about which container is proper for the water is crazy. The container doesn’t change the water.

Some like it hot, some like it cold, some like it iced, some fizzy, some with stuff mixed in with it – like tea, coffee, whatever.

No matter. It does not change the nature of the water.

Never mind the name or the cup or the mix. These are not important.

What we have in common is thirst. Thirst for the water of Life!

Stories, Parables, Fables and Koans –

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Truth, naked and cold, had been turned away from every door in the village. Her nakedness frightened the people. When Parable found her she was huddled in a corner, shivering and hungry. Taking pity on her, Parable gathered her up and took her home. There, she dressed Truth in story, warmed her and sent her out again. Clothed in story, Truth knocked again at the doors and was readily welcomed into the villagers’ houses. They invited her to eat at their tables and warm herself by their fires.    — Jewish Teaching Story

Yep, nobody wants to invite in the naked truth; it is often too painful to look at, or to even consider. In our two weekly Spiritual Sessions at A Home Away, we use a lot of stories, parables, fables and Zen koans. Everybody loves a story, especially if it is very short. One of the wonderful things about using story to explore spirituality, is that there is no intimidating ‘right or wrong’ way to interpret it. Stories meet people where they are at.  Stories can be engaging, funny, powerful, sad or bewildering. I personally love the bewildering ones, especially the Zen stories. This bewilderment or confusion often makes space for new ways to look at, and experience the world.

In this blog, I will be sharing some of our well loved, or really annoying,  stories. I would love to hear what it is that you get from them. Please write and share what comes up for you, even if it is confusion.
